Walking on the Wild Side with Coach 1941 NYFW 2017 Autumn/Winter Collection

Shearlings and leathers and florals, oh my!  Coach 1941’s autumn/winter 2017 collection evoked high-fashion, prairie life with cascading vintage-inspired floral print dresses, paired with leather and shearling overcoats in warm tones of auburn, chocolate, and camel. Remixed with hip-hop’s edginess, and decked with mini handbags, horse-themed patches, and fur hats to top it off, this year’s collection was very expressive of Executive Creative Director, Stuart Vevers’ design aesthetic.

Joining Coach as Executive Creative Director in September 2013, Vevers sought to breathe new life into 1941’s “classic American style and distinctive New York Spirit” designs by infusing his girl gang, rockabilly, and emerging teenagers of the 1950’s aesthetic. Vevers’ personal influences include fellow designers, Miuccia Prada, Marc Jacobs, and Phoebe Philo, and has previously held successful roles as Creative Director at Mulberry and LVMH’s Loewe. Earlier in his career, Vevers worked alongside the design teams at Bottega Veneta, Givenchy, and Louis Vuitton, and in 2006, he was awarded the Accessory Designer of the Year at the British Fashion Design Awards. Vevers takes the lead, having succeeded former Executive Creative Directors, Reed Krakoff and Bonnie Cashin.

From its humble beginnings as a small, family-run workshop, Coach has made it their mission to make “beautiful, functional items in modern shapes and the finest leathers”. Each piece is handmade with 13 signature leathers including, haircalf, cross grain, glove tanned, pebble, suede, croc-embossed, shearling, metallic, stamped snakeskin, and printed. Also included are smooth calf, soft calf, and exotic embossed. Coach’s signature silhouettes include the Dinky crossbody-to-clutch handbag featuring the original turnlock design designed by Bonnie Cashin, the Saddle Bag, which was the official United Airlines Stewardess bag in the 1980’s, the Slim Satchel, which was the early ancestor of future Coach briefcases, and the frequently re-editioned, all-time favorite, Duffle, characterized by its soft, slouchy shape.
